Working in partnership with Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory and Manitoulin Phragmites Group, we headed out to the shorelines at the mouth of Smith Bay Creek in Wiikwemkoong to remove phragmites which is an invasive reed. Phragmites was beginning to replace native vegetation and has the potential to block migratory salmonids species from accessing critical spawning areas and impacting various native species in the area. A huge thank you goes out to the Invasive Species Centre for issuing us a micro-grant to help combat this invasive species. As a reminder to everyone, starting July 17-23 2021 is Manitoulin Phragmites Week and we encourage volunteers to help remove this invasive reed across Manitoulin Island! #manitoulinstreams, #invasivespeciescentre #invasivespecies, #OFAH, #phragmitesremoval #manitoulinphragmitesproject
