Last week we planted 4250 trees at various sites along the Kagawong River, Blue Jay Creek, Mindemoya River and Norton’s Creek. So nice to go back to some of our sites and see the trees really starting to take off. All trees were bare root stock from Aquatic Wildlife Services and a Big Thank You to LaCloche Ecological Services for the donated trees! Also saw some beautiful rainbow trout in the Mindemoya River and Blue Jay Creek!

We had a great weekend in Kagawong at the Green Living Event. We completed a shoreline cleanup and sorted and recycled all the garbage, cleaned up the community gardens, learned about the upcoming BioBlitz that is being conducted in Misery Bay on May 30, 2015 and I was able to show community members what we have planned in regards to stream restoration projects in Kagawong this summer.
OFAH Zone D meeting starting at 10:00-3:00pm at the Sheguiandah Community Hall May 9, 2015 followed by a stream tour on Bass Lake Creek. Please Contact Seija Deschenes (705) 859-1653 so that we can make arrangements for the number of people attending.
The Assiginack Public School STAR (Students As Researchers) program invited us to the school to be part of their Options/Career Day to showcase to students what types of jobs are involved with stream restoration and to get them excited about possible career options.
Sue Meert talked them about becoming fisheries and invasive species biologists, the need for engineers, surveyors, construction workers and environmental technicians to conduct stream assessments. Nathan showed them our new GIS stream application that he is working on and how GIS is all around us and how it can be applied. One student loved the GIS application so much that he said "This is exactly what I want to do when I get older!". |
