Manitoulin Streams wants to invite volunteers to come out to Providence Bay at the Interpretive Center on September 27th for the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean up starting at 10:00am.

Site MIN 602 required sand bank stabilization (150 ft  long x 25 ft high) and enhancement of  in-stream habitat.   It was our intent to improve the stability of the sand bank shoreline and enhance the in-stream habitat by implementing a bio-engineered site design.

By reducing the amount of sedimentation from occurring over prime spawning habitat and by improving the fish habitat (channel edges, channel center, reducing the width/depth ratio by narrowing and deepening the channel, creating pools, improving available river bottom substrate, and riparian vegetation/canopy) in this area it will reduce the effects of sedimentation from occurring, low water levels, reduce water temperatures from getting higher in the summer thereby enhancing the overall quality and productivity of this river’s aquatic and riparian habitats over the long term.

Manitoulin Streams in partnership with the Municipality of Central Manitoulin received permits from the MNR and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to dredge the mouth of the Mindemoya River again this year.

We are hoping that this will help restore the south shore fishery!
