Smith's Bay Creek Restoration

It's been a busy month and a half! We have been working in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Smith Bay Creek. A microburst during the Cultural Pow Wow Festival in 2019 caused severe damage to trees along the creek blocking fish migration to spawning areas. Manitoulin Streams has been working on removing the felled trees and using them to create fish habitat; grading eroding shoreline to prevent erosion and sedimentation over spawning habitat; installing boulder clusters; adding additional spawning gravel and creating pools and riffle areas to improve fish habitat. We have also been working with Wasse-Abin Junior School, Pontiac School and Wiikwemkoong high school planting trees and shrubs to help stabilize the shoreline banks (pictures to follow). #manitoulinstreams, #wiikwemkoong, #streamrestoration, #wikwemikongtourism, #wiikwemkoongboardofeducation, #everychildmatters

We are super proud of all the students from Wasse-Abin Junior School, Pontiac School and Wiikwemkoong High school that came out to be a part of some land based learning with Nimkii Lavell and Manitoulin Streams in September. Students helped plant over 350 trees and shrubs along Smith Bay Creek to help with riparian restoration. Amazing community stewardship efforts taking place in Wiikwemkoong! #manitoulinstreams, #wiikwemkoongboardofeducation, #wiikwemkoong, #streamrestoration,#riparianrestoration, #wikwemikongtourism, #everychildmatters,#communitystewardship, #truthandreconciliation
