Great Canadian Shoreline Clean Up – Gore Bay 2014

9/29/2014

On Friday we went out to Gore Bay and conducted a shoreline cleanup with the Gore Bay Fish and Game Club and the Grade 8 class from C.C. McLean Public School.  We would like to thank Dean’s Valu-Mart in Gore for all the snacks and drinks they provided for the volunteers and the Town of Gore Bay for the garbage bags and gloves they provided.  We were able to clean up the whole shoreline from Buoys right through to the top of Bickell’s Creek.  Lots of garbage removed!  Thank you to everyone that helped out.

Dredging in Providence Bay; Mindemoya River

9/21/2014

The wind closed up the mouth of the Mindemoya River so we were able to dredge it open again this morning. Lots of fish in the river! We’ve also posted some pictures of the educational viewing and fishing platform that is currently being constructed which will be wheelchair accessible allowing everyone a chance to learn about our fishery and have a chance at angling.

On a side note, I ran into my friend and previous boss Bill Keller from the Living with Lakes Centre with his son Jason fishing on the river. Can’t beat a beautiful day and the sight of lots of fish. I took a couple of pictures at some of our other restoration sites on my way home to the office. The salmon are making it all the way up to the Manitou dam. Another successful spawning run!

Bass Lake Creek

9/17/2014

Manitoulin Streams worked with the Little Current Fish and Game Club to improve salmon and trout habitat at the upper reach of Bass Lake Creek.  A hydraulic hammer was used to expand a pool and 9 yards of spawning gravel was placed inside to create a spawning pool.  Sweeper logs that were washed downstream with high water flows were also replaced with boulders.  Passage upstream was created with spawning channels as well.

Mindemoya River

Dredged the mouth of the Mindemoya River with the help of the Municipality of Central Manitoulin this morning so that migrating salmon could make it upstream to spawn.  We’ve heard lots of positive comments this year about the fishery improving by doing this over the past 4 years.  A sand bar builds up blocking access due to wave action and it causes a trickle of water from the river (2-3 inches) over the sand for the salmon to try to cross.  This was causing salmon to become beached on the sand.  The dredging seems to be working!
