After the devastating 100 year flood, Kagawong River and its trail system have been greatly impacted. The sheer cliffs along the side of the trail created a funnel of all the debris directly into the river. Rock slides have covered parts of the walking trail, fallen trees were forced downstream making large pileups, and spawning gravel and larger rocks were pushed downstream causing diversion of water to the already eroded banks. The removal of this material from the trail and river is extremely costly and time consuming. The work is set to take place over the next few years. This work is being done together with the Township of Billings and many other partner groups. In the slideshow you will see:
Large piles of trees blocking the flow of the water. The walking bridge access has been washed out and some benches have fallen into the river. Rock material and potential future rock slides make walking on the trail hazardous. There are also rock bars in the middle of the river diverting the river to the riverbank which is causing more erosion. Overall this debris will cause more damage if left where it is. The spawning habitat for fish has also been greatly impacted. This debris can also alter the fishes ability to move upstream. The in-water working period is essential to avoid the crucial time the fish come to spawn so their breeding is not disrupted any more than necessary. Everyone is working as hard as possible during these times to restore Kagawong River. |

We are excited to announce our 7th annual Jackets & Jeans Fundraising Dinner & Auction, took place on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the Aundeck Omni Kaning 4 Directions Complex.
This fully catered evening brought together community members, local businesses, and supporters for a fun and relaxed night featuring a live auction, silent auction, raffle tables, and door prizes. Proceeds from the event directly support the continuation of our on-the-ground restoration work.

Fishmas Sock Auction
The Fishmas Sock Auction is a fun and festive way to support local conservation while showing off some serious fish-themed style. We have held the sock auction for the past two years and have raised over $1000 from this fundraiser alone. Featuring a unique collection of socks inspired by fish, freshwater ecosystems, and life on the water, this auction adds a lighthearted twist to fundraising perfect for the holiday season or any time of year. If you or a loved one is interested in donating knitted socks to Manitoulin Streams, we collect them all year and auction them off just in time for Christmas.
