Assiginack 2018 Deer Show

8/27/2018

Manitoulin Streams is always happy to have an educational table at the Assiginack Deer Show. Not only is it important to continue educating on current restoration activities, it's also a great opportunity to talk about our Deer Save program to locals. Many are still not aware that we keep a land owners listing for those wanting to participate in deer management activities in the winter, allowing volunteers access to break trails and feed if necessary.
We can't dictate what conditions winter will bring this year, we do know that the deer herd suffered somewhat from last winter, and the drought weather this summer is not positive for the health of the deer heading into what could be another harsh winter for 2018/19.
We are hopeful that conditions will continue to improve, but are grateful for the support and funding made available should we face emergency efforts needed. Anyone wanting to sign up to assist this winter can call Sue at 705-859-1653 to have their name placed on the volunteer list. Thank you to Jackie White and the Assiginack Township team for hosting a great event!

M'Chigeeng Creek Restoration with Lakeview School

Yesterday was a great day down at M'Chigeeng Creek with Grade 8's from Lakeview School. Each year they work on restoring this creek by improving the stream habitat, planting trees and picking up garbage. These kids did a great job! We also had Little Current grade 8 graduates come out to get some of their community volunteer hours for high school. It's amazing what can get done with everyone's help.  Miigwech and thank you for helping clean up our environment and improving our streams on Manitoulin Island!

Truxor to the Rescue at Blue Jay Creek & Michael's Bay on Manitou River

8/21/2018

It was a lot of hard work during some of the hottest days of the summer resulting in a lot of phragmites being removed from the mouth of Blue Jay Creek and Michael's Bay on the Manitou River. Tackling this invasive reed each year will help protect this aquatic habitat before its taken over. Thanks to Judith Jones and her crew for tackling this extreme job, Manitoulin Streams was happy to assist!
