The Manitoulin Phragmites group working hard at combating phragmites at the mouth of the Blue Jay Creek using a Truxor machine. This is a costly yet effective process for attacking the invasive plant in the water where pesticides are not an option.

Phragmites removal took place by the White's Point Marsh. There was one new large patch and a smaller patch discovered and removed. The areas that were removed last year look clear with only a couple remaining which were taken down. We anticipate that cutting them under water they will drown out over the next year or so. Thanks to David Hall for all helping with this task!
Manitoulin Streams would like to thank the late Arthur and Joyce Berry for their legacy donation toward our Kagawong restoration project in 2018. Martha Bonanno and her family were able to come up to see the memorial bench that we installed in their memory overlooking the beautiful stone carving of the salmon by Michael Belmore. They were excited to see Arthur's wishes through. We hope the public can sit down, relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the Kagawong River as they did or maybe dip a line!
Thank you to Algis Tribinevicius for installing the new bench for the Lake Manitou Area Association (LMAA) on behalf of Manitoulin Streams. We hope residents and visitors enjoy this beautiful view!
August was a very busy month for events! Countryfest is one of the biggest events on the island and we are happy to present our educational table at the event. Popular country bands rocked all weekend and a mixed crowd of tourists and locals visited our table. We were pleased to be the recipient of “Cruise for a Cause” and the donations given on the shuttle bus bringing attendees to and from downtown Little Current. Thanks to KT and the crew from Country 103 for an amazing weekend and contributing to our stream restoration work from this amazing event! |
