It's almost that time of season when anglers head out for the annual smelt run in order to catch a feast for the family. This is a reminder that Rainbow Smelt are an invasive species so never use live or dead smelts as bait in Ontario lakes, rivers or streams. Check the regulations as to what can be used. When cleaning rainbow smelt, be careful not to dump entrails into a lake or river. Fertilized rainbow smelt eggs can easily invade new waters and they can drastically impact the fishery. Check out FMZ10 Council in our region to see how they are trying to protect our waters from Rainbow Smelt!
