ANGLING OPPORTUNITIES

Fish Viewing & Angling Platforms

Manitoulin Streams works with local communities to create safe, accessible spaces where people can connect with fish, water, and the natural world. Through partnerships with municipalities and First Nation communities, we have helped design and construct fish viewing and angling platforms at key locations around Manitoulin Island.

These projects include a fish viewing platform on the Mindemoya River in Providence Bay, developed in partnership with the Municipality of Central Manitoulin; a platform at the mouth of the Kagawong River, created in collaboration with the Township of Billings; an accessible angling platform at the Wiikwemkoong waterfront and marina; and an educational viewing platform constructed alongside restoration work at Bass Lake Creek in partnership with the Little Current Fish & Game Club. Each site was selected to highlight important waterways while improving public access and fostering stewardship.

All platforms are equipped with educational signage that shares information about the fish and wildlife that depend on these waters, as well as the cultural significance of water to the Anishinaabe people. In Wiikwemkoong, one interpretive sign honours the life and journey of Josephine Mandamin, the renowned Water Walker, and her commitment to protecting water for future generations.

In Kagawong and Providence Bay, these platforms and their interpretive signage play an important role in Manitoulin Streams’ annual Salmon Run tours, held each October. During these guided events, community members and visitors gather to observe migrating salmon, learn about fish life cycles, and better understand the importance of healthy rivers and connected habitats.

Accessibility and stewardship are central to these projects. By creating barrier-free access points, these platforms allow people of all ages and abilities to safely experience fishing, fish viewing, and time along the water’s edge. Each platform was constructed alongside restoration activities, including shoreline stabilization, in-stream habitat enhancement, and the creation of spawning beds for the fish species that use these areas.

Together with our partners, Manitoulin Streams continues to build places that connect people to water, support healthy fisheries, and encourage care for Manitoulin Island’s rivers and shorelines.
