Site M63 Manitou River 2009 PDF Print E-mail

In stream work has been completed at site M63 with site designs from Great Lakes Environmental Services. Three pools were chiseled out of the limestone bedrock and habitat was installed.

The pools give the fish a deeper area to navigate up this sometimes shallow river. Pictured to the left is the hydraulic jack hammer that created the pool. The pictured pool can be seen from the bridge on Case Side Road near Sandfield, ON. Two pools are 7.8m x 3m x 0.9m and the third pool is 3m x 3m x 0.9m. Two of them will have modified vortex weirs around them made out of 1m diametre boulders.

A restricted cattle watering area was installed on the river bank . Cedar rail fencing was installed parallel to the river with the help of the Ontario Rangers from Killarney Provincial Park.

Last but not least the curve in the river was reinforced with 1m diametre boulders. These boulders were also placed in
the stream bed to create a scouring effect which also oxygenates the water and provides a resting spot from the current for the fish.
